SUSTAINABLE FARMING OF THE FUTURE (2023) IS A VISUAL NARRATIVE ROOTED IN A CRITICAL AGRARIAN PERSPECTIVE, A LENS THAT CHALLENGES DOMINANT UNDERSTANDINGS OF LAND, LABOR, AND WHO BELONGS IN FARMING SPACES. Centering Vanguard Ranch, a Black-owned farm in Gordonsville, Virginia, these photos document a powerful reimagining of agriculture as a practice of personal freedom, cultural memory, and collective liberation.
Too often, Black relationships to land are seen only through loss, trauma, or disconnection. While those histories matter, this work shifts the focus to reclaiming and being present with the land. Vanguard Ranch is not just a place of food production, but also a space where land is lived on, not exploited. It is a site where the past, present, and future of Black farming come together, where farming becomes a spiritual, political, and ecological act of survival and self-determination.
While attention to Black farmers and food justice has grown, there are still too few images showing the intimate, grounded, and joyful realities of what this liberating work looks like in practice.
