Sweet Relief: Herbal Honey

Ciara Mackey-Hall

When my family feels a cold coming on, they know to go to the cabinet and get honey, herbs, spices, and a mixing bowl. It has been mesmerizing to watch my children build relationships with different medicinal herbs and plants. Both children and adults have the capacity to learn about their bodies and what they need to be well. It is up to us to pass on these recipes and traditions.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of raw local honey
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder

  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1 teaspoon ginger

  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Benefits of Herbal Honey

Local raw honey

May help ease seasonal allergy symptoms by exposing you to small amounts of local pollen. It’s also a natural cough soother and rich in antioxidants.

Turmeric

Contains curcumin, a plant compound known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It may also support immune function and gut health.

Black pepper

Contains piperine, a natural compound that helps the body absorb curcumin more effectively.

Cinnamon

Packed with antioxidants and contains compounds that may help reduce inflammation.

Ginger

Traditionally used to soothe sore muscles and may help reduce inflammation, including in the airways.

Cayenne pepper

Rich in vitamins and antioxidants. It contains capsaicin, which may support healthy circulation and temporarily increase metabolism.

Directions

  1. Pour half of the honey into a clean, empty jar with a lid.
  2. Add all of the spices.
  3. Pour the second half of honey on top.
  4. Mix until combined.
  5. Store in a cool dry place and use as needed. No refrigeration needed.
  6. Take 1 tablespoon up to six times a day at the first sign of a sore throat or cold. You can also stir it into tea, spoon it over yogurt, or add it to your favorite recipes for an extra boost of flavor and immune protection. Note: Honey should never be given to infants under 12 months of age.
